In 2007, dancer Aminah Abdul Jillil moved to Las Vegas and was cast in the lead role of Crimson in Criss Angel’s Believe by Cirque du Soleil. During downtime in the theater, she came up with the idea for a shoe line. She found a shoemaker in L.A. to make her first prototype, a sandal with an elaborate cascade of coins and another with a beautiful big bow that extended around the ankle. After starting with four styles, she now introduces new pairs twice a year. In the U.S., Jillil sells mostly to private clients and online. Abroad, her retailers are in locations such as Finland, Russia, Indonesia and the Middle East. Her following has grown, too, thanks to social media and celebrities coveting her footwear, including Rihanna, who wore a Jillil original in the “Where Have You Been” music video.
