UNLV’s search for a basketball coach didn’t go smoothly. Among the names rumored to have been offered the job before turning it down were Cincinnati’s Mick Cronin, Louisville’s Rick Pitino and Randy Bennett of St. Mary’s. Chris Beard of Arkansas-Little Rock actually accepted the position and was on the job for a week before spurning UNLV for his “dream job” at Texas Tech. All of this happened very publicly, so it’s no secret that Marvin Menzies wasn’t the school’s first choice. But he doesn’t seem to care. Once hired, Menzies hit the ground running and did an admirable job filling the roster with a collection of intriguing recruits, despite not being given much time with which to work. Menzies is a jovial man by nature and has even joked about not being the top choice, but he’s taking the job very seriously.
