Best Hope for Art in Southern Nevada

Art Museum at Symphony Park

While the Arts District’s formerly vibrant gallery scene has been whittled down to almost nothing after a number of closures, Southern Nevadans experienced the rain after the drought when Tilting the Basin: Contemporary Art of Nevada landed at a nondescript warehouse off Commerce Street. That exhibit—a stellar showing of work by Silver State artists—was realized because of a partnership between Reno’s Nevada Museum of Art and the planned Art Museum at Symphony Park. The institution recently received state dollars, and plans are seemingly on track. The cultural landscape of Southern Nevada will be elevated with just its opening, but if it puts on shows half the caliber of Tilting, it could become a major tourism draw—giving people a lot more to talk about in Downtown Las Vegas than yard-long cocktails and hipster coffee shops.
