Yvanna Cancela

One of the bright spots of the 2016 elections, at least from our point of view, was the Silver State turning blue and electing the first Latina woman to the Senate. And while Catherine Cortez Masto got most of the ink on the national level, locally, a very young star was making her mark. Yvanna Cancela, not even 30 and already the political director of the 57,000-strong Culinary Workers Union for seven years—the youngest person to hold the position—was one of the most vocal oppositions against Trump during the campaign. (Remember the massive taco truck protest in front of Trump Tower?) At the end of 2016, she was appointed to the state Senate, becoming the first Latina to hold the position. Cancela’s political career may be nascent, but judging by what she has accomplished so far, we expect big things. What glass ceiling? Twitter: @yvannacancela
