No one saw chef michael laplaca coming when the Fiamma, Bradley Ogden and Due Forni alum was tapped to open Portofino in The Mirage, a replacement for longtime Italian restaurant Onda. Since then, the elegant spot has earned a devout industry following because of LaPlaca’s fresh takes on Italian classics, banging out luxury seasonal items such as the $100 lasagna adorned with gold flakes, alongside killer handmade pasta dishes that go way beyond your regular spaghetti and red sauce. Too often, it seems like Italian restaurants are either geared toward hardcore Sunday gravy or are trattorias dedicated to true regional cuisine. Portofino manages to deliver in between the two, consistently surprising us along the way.
