Event Details

Josh Tillman has been a fixture of the indie-rock scene since 2003, when he started releasing solo tracks under the moniker J. Tillman. Since then he’s toured with a number of bands, joined Seattle folk rock outfit Fleet Foxes behind the drums for four years from 2008 to 2012, and gained significant fame and following as Father John Misty. Vegas Seven identified essential tracks from each phase of his career that are perfect plays to pump you up for his Oct. 12 gig at Brooklyn Bowl.

Tillman: “Our Beloved Tyrant”

The musician’s latest solo project effort, 2010’s Singing Ax, is a solemn and somber soundtrack chock full of dark lyrics and imagery. This track features Tillman’s smooth tenor, as he croons about a seemingly corrupt father-figure type: “Your descent into madness was all of you we had / It took a barrel and three dancers to coerce you back to bed / When you’d come bursting from your quarters / With the dagger Daddy held.”

Fleet Foxes: “Grown Ocean”

The second single off 2011’s Helplessness Blues—the only album Tillman would record with the band—starts with Tillman’s drumstick countoff and slowly burns into a blaze twice with two crescendos that have great payoffs. It wouldn’t have the driving energy it has without Tillman’s talent behind the kit—specifically some fantastic cymbal work.

Father John Misty: “Real Love Baby”

Regardless of whether he’s recording as J. Tillman or Father John Misty, the musician usually sticks to a sound with indie and folk affectations. He shakes things up on this track, released as a single in May 2016. It’s soulful and has an undeniable groove that begs its listener to get up on their feet.

The show also serves as a “Thank You” to first responders following the 1 October attack in Las Vegas. Hospital staff, police officers, and other first responders can reserve free tickets online, which can be picked up at will call with both state-issued and staff identification.

Father John Misty plays Oct. 12, 8 p.m., tickets start at $38, Brooklyn Bowl at The Linq Promenade,  brooklynbowl.com/las-vegas
