Best Way to Challenge Yourself

Just because it’s close doesn’t mean it’s easy. Summiting Mount Charleston is a grueling, 12-hour day hike with 4,300 feet of elevation gain and lots of trail above 10,000 feet. It’s hard to breathe up that high, and the winds really whip near the treeless summit. But the payoff is so much more aesthetically pleasing than clamping eyes on that fat dude on the next treadmill. The trail winds past the debris field of a military plane that crashed there in 1955, and on a clear day you can see 300 miles. Most hikers take the 8.3-mile South Loop Trail up and back, but if you want to make a loop out of it you can descend via the North Loop Trail, though you’ll have about a mile to hike back to your car.
