The Caliper Whisperer

Holly Lee Brewer

With New Year’s resolution season in high gear, we asked Holly Lee Brewer, a registered dietitian and nutritionist with Canyon Ranch SpaClub at the Venetian, for a few fresh insights.

What do you think of the government’s food pyramid becoming plates?

It’s funny for me because I’ve been drawing plates and dividing it into sections for years. It’s very visual, it’s very easy to understand and it’s more realistic as far as portions. The recommendations didn’t really change; it’s how they presented it.

What’s the biggest mistake people make when dieting?

The mistake a lot of people make is an all-or-nothing approach. They decide they’re going to make all these changes, and if they mess up once, they go back to their old habits.

What foods do most of us not get enough of?

Green, leafy vegetables. They have potassium, fiber, antioxidants, phytonutrients. Iceberg lettuce is just crispy water.
