September 23rd, 2010
With all the focus on food allergies lately—from peanut-free plane rides to shoveling through an endless array of gluten-free products to find the Wonder Bread—eyes are bound to roll. However, there is plenty of evidence that the epidemic is very real. Read more »

A Beautiful Way to Shape Up
Ballet academy offers a graceful, artistic alternative to your usual workout class
September 9th, 2010
A 5-foot-3 balletic nymph just burnt a hole in my calf muscle. She did it in 90 seconds, and that was the result of simply mimicking her graceful frame with a few basic postures. It becomes immediately apparent I’m a long way off being ballet fit. Meet Sarah Fuhrman, one of the highly trained, superlatively skilled instructors at the Academy of Nevada Ballet Theatre. “Toned” doesn’t do this young woman justice. If you fired a bullet at her, she could probably deal with it with either an elegant leap through the air to dodge the imminent threat, or just flex and let the bullet bounce off her. Watching Sarah walk is a thing of beauty, because she doesn’t really walk as such, she glides. Read more »

Modern chiropractors move beyond manipulation
August 26th, 2010
It was never the prettiest way to describe a health procedure: “I went to the chiropractor and had my back cracked.” Eventually, “manipulate” became the industry’s word of choice. And, sure, it sounds better. But not much better. Today, though, changes in treatment are forcing us to find more nuanced ways to describe the way chiropractors deal with our aches and pains. Victor Leach, chiropractic physician at Bio-Mechanics of Las Vegas (2520 St. Rose Parkway, 579-9876), says two approaches dominate the field: spine manipulation only, and a mixed approach in which chiropractors use various techniques in addition to traditional manipulation. “Mixers,” as Leach calls them, often work in conjunction with physical therapists. Local physical therapist shares seven ways to stay loose at work—and avoid neck and back problems
July 15th, 2010
Sitting and standing for long periods of time is the norm in the work world these days. Even if your posture is perfect and your ergonomics are by the book, spending eight hours a day at your computer can lead to dysfunction and derangement, which leads to neck and back pain. Read more »

Many exotic fruits and veggies have great nutritional qualities — you just have to be willing to try them
July 1st, 2010
Summer is the best season for enjoying nature’s bounty; exotic fruits and vegetables are not only delicious, but also colorful and healthful. You just need to know where to look, and have a little courage to be adventurous. Most vegetables and many fruits at Whole Foods Markets are certified organic, but the exotic inventory is limited. Ashley Hoff, one of the produce managers at the Green Valley branch, says customer demand for unusual produce is sporadic at best. Read more »

Regimen Le Rêve
Workouts for these performers are pretty intense, but there’s a variation that can benefit your body
June 17th, 2010
In a corner of the Le Rêve gym, a Herculean athlete does a handstand and splits his muscular legs into a completely level, horizontal line, toes pointed. With perfect form, he bends his elbows and does a “push-up.” It’s just part of the warm-up for the performers, as they train for moves requiring strength and agility, such as balancing on a wire-framed globe or doing an upside-down tango underwater in the aquatic theater-in-the-round performance at the Wynn. ‘This Is Insane, What We Do’
And yet Crossfit keeps growing in popularity. What’s the appeal?
May 27th, 2010
Upon crossing the threshold at Crossfit Las Vegas, it’s obvious this isn’t a typical gym. There are no lines of elliptical machines or treadmills, no rows of Bowflex look-alikes. Instead, it’s a warehouse-size facility with high bars, weight stands and tons of floor space. Walls have whiteboards with names of people, exercises and times scribbled on them. Read more »
