It took them more than five months on the road to get here, but Joseph Crist and Laura Brunett made it intact to their wedding Sept. 24 at Lake Mead’s 33 Hole Overlook. After leaving their home in Canton, Mich., on April 15, they had walked most of a 2,500-mile route before physical ailments forced them to finish the journey in a Greyhound bus.
States visited: Eight.
Money spent: $3,800 (They started with $4,800).
Money earned: $3,000 (Both took jobs in Albuquerque, N.M.).
Best meal: Cheeseburgers in Moline, Ill.
Worst meal: Pasta and tomato paste at an Indiana campsite.
Worst accommodations: Cockroach-infested motel in central Missouri.
Most romantic moment: Watching the sunset in Pueblo, Colo.
Moment that threatened their relationship: An hours-long argument in the rain in Pocahontas, Ill., over whether to get a motel room. (He thought they had been spending too much money on motels.)
Moment that strengthened their relationship: That same argument. (She admits he was probably right.)
Advice to others planning a similar trip: Don’t take the bulk of the walk during summer.
