Huntington Press, the venerable Las Vegas publisher of nonfiction and instructional gambling books, is taking a walk on the literary side with the addition of its new fiction imprint, VegasLit. In addition to culling the talents of regional authors, it will also use local artists for book-cover art. Books will be released as both e-books ($3) and trade paperbacks ($13).
Three novels are already slated for release: Risk of Ruin (Sept. 30) by gambling author (and Vegas Lit senior editor) Arnold Snyder offers a “scathing social satire ... on what it really means to be ‘God.’” Abracadabra (Nov. 30), a thriller by Salt Lake City-based novelist and playwright David Kranes, explores what happens when a famous Las Vegas magician makes an audience member disappear … for good. Becoming Bobby (Jan.15), a “surreal satirical fantasy” by former Cigar Aficianado gambling columnist Michael Konik, rounds out VegasLit’s first offerings. The novel tells of a regular guy who mysteriously becomes a high-roller.
Huntington’s doing a little high-rolling of its own with VegasLit, but if it pays off, it will be another boon to a local culture that—with The Smith Center and the emergence of downtown—has already been turning heads nationally.
