Short-film festival Tropfest brought in a passel of Hollywood talent to judge all-star shorts from its 20-year history, up to and including Tobey “Why Wasn’t I Invited to the Spider-Man Reboot” Maguire and James “Could Be Worse, You Could’ve Been in the Remake for Straw Dogs” Woods.
The Daily Show’s Rob Corddry hosted the June 3 competition at the Cosmopolitan, while United States of Tara’s Toni Collette was president of a jury that included Rebel Wilson (Bridesmaids), Anthony LaPaglia (Happy Feet), Griffin Dunne (An American Werewolf in London), Charles Randolph (Love and Other Drugs) and Sundance programmer Trevor Groth (formerly CineVegas’ artistic director).
Winning flick The Story of Bubble Boy was not, in fact, a documentary about the making of the 2001 Jake Gyllenhaal movie Bubble Boy. If Woods and Maguire left in a huff of false-advertising indignation, who could blame them?
