7 Rebels to Watch

Once again, the Rebels are young—and they’ll be playing some of the nation’s toughest teams. But there’s something new this year: hope.

A year ago, the UNLV football team went 2-11 while suiting up 23 freshmen and playing one of the nation’s toughest schedules. Guess what? This year, the Rebels have 31 freshmen and one of the nation’s toughest schedules. So life won’t be much easier for coach Bobby Hauck in his second year at UNLV. They may not be ready to beat national powers such as Wisconsin, Boise State and TCU, but they’ve got plenty of players worth watching as the team grows. Read more »

Rebels in for rough time at Wisconsin despite past success against spread

UNLV will be fortunate to match last year’s two wins. The carnage figures to commence Sept. 1 when UNLV travels to Camp Randall Stadium to face No. 11 Wisconsin. Forget about springing a monumental upset; Terrelle Pryor has a better chance of getting an honorary doctorate from Ohio State than the Rebels do of beating the Badgers (who have won 15 straight home openers by an average of 18 points per game). The question is, can UNLV just be competitive? Check that: mildly competitive? Read more »

Jim Fassel’s Got No Doubt

Running a pro football franchise in Las Vegas takes audacity and swagger. The Locomotives coach—a former NFL boss—has plenty of both.

Nearly 11 years have passed since Fassel shoved his chips to the middle of the table, and nearly eight years since he last walked the sidelines as an NFL head coach. These days, Fassel, who turns 62 on Aug. 31, serves as president/general manager/head coach of the two-time defending UFL champion Las Vegas Locomotives. Read more »

Franchised!

Revisiting Las Vegas’ not-so-storied history in professional football

As the two-time defending champions of the 2-year-old United Football League, the Locomotives are the most successful professional football franchise in Las Vegas has ever had, but they are far from the first. Most of the teams had a shelf life slightly longer than a carton of milk, with varying degrees of success on and off the field. Here’s a glimpse at the good, the bad and the ugly of Las Vegas’ gridiron past. Read more »

We Like to Watch. Here’s Where We Do It.

Yes, we’re still talking football …

For some football fans, nothing beats waking up on a Saturday or Sunday morning, planting yourself on the recliner and spending 12 hours glued to the big screen. Of course, those fans don’t have wives nagging them to help around the house. Or a fridge that runs out of beer. If that latter scenario hits real close to, uh, home, then it’s time to grab the keys, flee the coop and remember why Southern Nevada is nirvana for football fans—the sports book/sports bar experience. Fan Seeks Team

All she wants is an NFL franchise for Las Vegas. Is that too much to ask?

I adopted the Cards as my team because I once lived in Arizona, and I like the regional affiliation. But I’m not an Arizonan. I’m a Nevadan, a Las Vegan and a super-frustrated football fan—not only because my team consistently sucks (minus the 2008 Super Bowl season; we miss you, Kurt Warner), but because we don’t have an NFL team in Las Vegas. Chiefs, Ravens set to take big step backward in AFC this season

The Patriots put up 47 points … and Tom Brady didn’t even play. Rex Grossman and the Redskins manhandled the Steelers, 16-7. The Browns, Rams and Panthers all posted double-digit victories over the Packers, Colts and Giants, respectively. Even the Lions roared to a 31-point win. Read more »

Packers set for another big year, but Eagles won’t fly as high as expectations

Most properties around town have released their season win totals … which means it’s time for yours truly to dive in and present my “best bets” for both the NFC (this week) and AFC (next week), using the best available numbers from four establishments: MGM Resorts, Las Vegas Hilton, Cantor and Lucky’s.
