Our man Ogden, a dessert fit for The King, and wine for your burger

The holiday season brought me to California's Central Coast, where I had the chance to dine at Root 246, Bradley Ogden's seminal Solvang, Calif., restaurant at the Hotel Corque (400 Alisal Road, 805-686-8681). When I look back on 2011—and I had a number of great meals during the year, including one at Dinner, Heston Blumenthal's London restaurant—this meal truly stands out.

In addition to the regular dinner menu, 35 Steaks will offer several specials for the holiday weekend. Chef Chris Noble showcases fantastic seasonal ingredients with some festive additions. The pork-belly special, for example, is garnished with sweet carrot perdue, rum raisins and eggnog buerre blanc.

Two-bite reviews: Bradley Ogden and 35 Steaks + Martinis

    By Max Jacobson

If there’s one thing you can depend on at a Strip restaurant, it is finding a great piece of beef. Two of our major casinos have rethought their steak options. One is Caesars Palace, where the recently shuttered Nero’s will be replaced by Old Homestead, a New York City restaurant, in early December. The other is the Hard Rock, where a new concept, 35 Steaks + Martinis, is rocking everyone’s world at the moment.

Coffee and cupcakes, steak and martinis, and brunch according to Rick Moonen

There seems no end to the cupcake craze. The Plaza, which has totally redone its food-service venues, recently announced a pair of new ventures as of Sept. 1. One is Gigi’s Cupcakes, a national franchise started by a one-time cleaning lady in Nashville, Tenn. Today, the chain sells 10 million cupcakes a year in its 50-plus stores.
