It's Not Your Father's Driving School
At Driver's Edge, race car drivers do the teaching
May 7th, 2013
On a wide stretch of pavement at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, 93 teenagers take turns driving rental cars like they stole them. They slap pedals to the floor, whip steering wheels, slam on brakes and spin out on wet asphalt. The only difference between this and a high school parking lot after a football game was the crowd of smiling parents. I was one of them, as my daughters tore up the track six years ago. Read more »

Failure to secure bring Spring Training to Henderson still haunts Don Logan
April 30th, 2013
As Don Logan drives south into Henderson, the longtime Las Vegas 51s executive can’t help but look at the plot of undeveloped desert near Galleria Drive east of U.S. 95 and envision what might have been. On two separate occasions—the first starting in 1994, the second in 1999—Logan tried to bring Major League Baseball teams here for spring training, and the failure to make it happen still bothers him. Preserve provides a home for descendants of the MGM roaring lion
April 23rd, 2013
My wife and I stand in a glass box, surrounded by lions. The enclosure at the Lion Habitat Ranch near the junction of St. Rose Parkway and Interstate 15 serves as a photo booth for visitors to pose with the cubs, who wrestle each other in a partitioned space, and a dining room for those who want to “Feast with the Beasts.” Read more »

March 26th, 2013

Education for Educators … Or Not
One teacher’s thoughts on frozen pay and dampened spirits
March 19th, 2013
Tari Smethurst is no less excited about walking into her fifth-grade classroom today than she was 14 years ago when she left upstate New York to teach in the Clark County School District. She loves the students at her Title 1 east side elementary school (her principal requested that it not be named here), and her passion for making a difference in their lives has only grown. OK, it’s Winston, but this guy’s one rugged Rebel
February 14th, 2013
Ken Johann’s Hemingway-like visage nearly disappears in a tobacco cloud. Decades of Winstons have produced a deep, raspy voice. My throat and lungs nearly seize. When UNLV soccer coach Rich Ryerson calls to ask if Johann wants to accompany him to the Rebels’ basketball game that night, the octogenarian booms: Read more »
