How the Pyramids Were Built

A magical nightclub history tour with DJ Dave Fogg

The Strip is full of world-class nightclubs with superstar DJs. You might believe it was always like this—but it wasn’t. There is little documentation of city’s nightlife evolution, which leaves the chronicle to be told by those who were there. Dave Fogg is one on these men: a working DJ when it all began, and still a force with which to be reckoned. Read more »

Electric Flower Power

Insomniac founder Pasquale Rotella tracks the evolution of the techno party

I grew up in L.A., and my father was gone quite a bit. He was in the television industry, and the tight schedules of shows like Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers and The Greatest American Hero kept me in somewhat of a paternal role in aid of my mother, who was rearing what would end up totaling five children. Having been burdened with so much responsibility at such a young age, my parents felt I had proven myself trustworthy by the time I entered my early teens, and allowed me to come and go as I pleased, sans curfew, as long as I stayed safe and let them know where I was. The Playboy Club Goes Gold

DJs celebrate 50 years of bunnies, blackjack, boobs and bourbon

As a college student, I found the only reason to watch the Playboy Channel was on the slim chance that an episode of Playboy After Dark would air. Of course, other programming might have caught my eye once or twice, but that’s not my point. Read more »

The Persecution of St. Paul of Rhode Island

A conversation with DJ Pauly D about his true passion and the distraction of fame

The business of DJing has allowed The Captains of Industry to pursue those things in life which make men well-rounded—the same things that perhaps inspired the musings of Mark Twain, the vision of Emilio Pucci, the indulgences of Bob Gucionne. We like to think so, anyway. And with that in mind, we let the worldview define our DJing as opposed to the DJing define our worldview. Read more »

The upside of Memorial Day madness in Vegas: great DJs at work

]There are amazing upsides to Memorial Day festivities, including noteworthy guest DJ talent. This year is no exception, though I doubt I will be able to attend any of the celebrations that pique my interest, due to my otherwise good fortune of gainful employment. But, if I was a civilian, here are a few places I’d love to visit Read more »

Move for Me, I’ll Move for You

Kaskade reveals why Sunday isn’t just for church

Last year, while trying to get my sea legs back, I made a mental prep list for the upcoming summer pool season: Buy a new Speedo, have my Captain’s hat cleaned and find some new songs to make the incoming crowds of party people splash. I considered that last bit of business the most important, and as I scrolled through the slew of MP3s in my inbox, I came across an e-mail from the central DJ wrangler for the Tao empire, Omar Galeano. The message contained a decree from Tao Group owner/partner/shot-caller Jason Strauss that commanded all resident DJs to work Kaskade’s “Move for Me” into their sets, in all venues, on all days, effective immediately. A short list of disc jockeys was attached on the message and, as the Saturday resident at Tao Beach at that time, I went about securing said track. Read more »

Bad Boy for Life

Beatport pioneer talks past, present and future electronica, and the healthful side of snacking

Utter the name “Bad Boy Bill” and the first thing that comes to mind for most DJs, myself included, is the 1989 Disco Mix Club World DJ Championships. And it’s not just because he sported a mullet that any Canadian hockey player would be envious of; it’s because during the climax of his performance, a scantily clad, well-endowed female proceeded to remove his sweatpants in order to expose a strategically placed phallus of massive proportions. The First Annual Las Vegas DJ Awards Debriefing

If you are a DJ and were able to attend the inaugural Las Vegas DJ Awards on April 25, perhaps you don’t work as much as certain other DJs—The Captains of Industry, for instance. It was “all hands on deck” for us, as usual, with another stellar night at the lavish Playboy Club. Read more »

Tiësto: Bringing Down the House

Dutch DJ blurs musical borders, pushes electronic envelope

Although it may not seem like it, with these constant biting winds and sporadic showers of late, the Las Vegas pool season is upon us. And regardless of what the weatherman says is going to go down, the lush adults-only oasis that is Liquid pool at Aria is going to be packed with party people April 8. Read more »
