A Monster Buffet, More Free Money and Bad Chicken

Caesars Palace has gotten a good deal of attention for its new Bacchanal Buffet. Believe the hype. I’ll just come right out and say it: This is probably the most amazing buffet Las Vegas has ever seen. Read more »

Team Meetings

Several years ago, the Las Vegas Review-Journal published its first list of local bars that follow specific NFL teams. I loved it for two reasons. First, it seemed like going to a Detroit bar was a sure way to connect with people from my hometown. And second, I figured that the bars would feature food and beer brands indigenous to the cities they represented, meaning I could find good Philly cheesesteaks, original-style Buffalo wings, and other regional culinary specialties. I was right on both counts. Read more »

Football and the fate of the free hot dog

What’s happened to Monday Night Football? Once a key cog in the casino promotions machine, MNF parties have not only been deemphasized, they’ve been discontinued in many places. Read more »

Gaming the Gangsters

If you don’t know by now, there are two mob exhibits in town—downtown’s Mob Museum and the Tropicana’s Mob Attraction. When they opened, I was high on the one downtown and less so on the one at the Trop. But that was before new ownership made some solid changes at the Trop spot. Read more »

A debut, a superbuffet and a fond farewell

It wasn’t accompanied by a lot of fanfare, but a new casino opened this week—the new Wildfire Sunset, formerly the Gold Rush, next to Sunset Station. Wildfire Sunset is a slots-only casino (no table games) with a sportsbook. There’s also a Wildburger, a 24-hour restaurant that serves big hamburgers for $8. Read more »

Top Steaks for Half Price

You can pay anywhere from $4.99 to $54.99 for a steak dinner in Las Vegas. The trick is getting the high-end quality for as little as possible. Experience will get you there eventually—try enough places and you’ll find the best deals—but there are other ways to ensure a bargain. One of the best is to take advantage of half-price specials that are limited to certain days or hours. Read more »

Getting the Jump on Football Contests

With football season less than a month away, sportsbooks have begun announcing the details of their handicapping contests. While it’s still too early to determine which will offer the best return for your money, there are some concepts you should be aware of if you want to get the highest return for your contest dollar. The primary strategy involves looking for add-ons for playing multiple entries and taking advantage of early-bird sweeteners. Read more »

Breakfast of Champions, and Other Bargains

The cheapo breakfast was once synonymous with Las Vegas, but it’s hard to find one these days. What’s cheapo? Ninety-nine cents is the standard, but even a buck-ninety-nine qualifies, and they just don’t do those much anymore. One place that does is Emily’s at Club Fortune, which comes in right in the middle with a $1.49 breakfast, served daily from 6 to 11 a.m. This is a good one, with three eggs, two bacon or sausage, hash browns and toast. The only problem is getting out to the south end of Boulder Highway. Read more »

Seven for Seven

For years I’ve picked and published the “Las Vegas’ Top Ten Values” at LasVegasAdvisor.com, but that list is tailored for visitors. The list that follows is different in that it’s been tweaked for locals. While this list doesn’t constitute the absolute best deals in town, the following “Seven for Seven” is a potent mix of drinking, dining, entertainment and gambling that won’t disappoint. Read more »
