Dogs, balls and a presidential plug

Summertime always brings an eclectic selection of deals. Here’s a smattering of interesting plays I came across while compiling the July Las Vegas Advisor newsletter. Read more »

How low can they go?

So, how about that economic recovery? They say it’s happening—and key indicators like higher gambling wins and increased visitation seem to support the premise—but I’m not so sure. Why? Because an even more important indicator says otherwise. A reliable constant in Las Vegas marketing has always been tough times bring low room rates. Lowering rates to put people in rooms is Survival 101. So if hotel rooms are cheap, it’s highly probable that the joints are still scratchin’. Read more »

The Price of a Slice

A new restaurant called Slice of Vegas Pizza opened in April at Mandalay Place. It serves pasta, salads and other Italian dishes—but as the name and set-up imply, a big part of the business model is to sell pizza by the slice to passersby in the mall. A slice of pizza is always a good play when you’re on the move and don’t want to stop to eat, but $4.95 for cheese or $6.95 for one with toppings? That’s too much. Read more »

Bar Hall of Fame—Gamblers’ Edition

History, atmosphere, food selection, drink prices—these are among the things Vegas Seven considered when choosing a Bar Hall of Fame. But what about the gamblers? Players have different priorities, and some bars are superior to others when it comes to pay schedules, promotions and comps. The following is by no means a complete list off Hall-of-Fame-worthy gamblers’ bars, but it shines a light on what’s necessary to make it into the pantheon. Read more »

At the WSOP, big gambles and cheap eats

Once again, the chips are down. Through July 16, tens of thousands of poker players are descending on the Rio to compete for tens of millions of dollars in the annual World Series of Poker. If you haven’t been there, you should check it out. Walk into the big hall and you’ll be stunned by the enormity of it all. Even the sound is distinctive—a nonstop clicking of chips that sounds like an invasion of crickets. This is without question the most awe-inspiring single gambling event in the world, and it’s free to view. Read more »

Free Money, Free Rides, and a Shout Out for Security

I recently wrote about the big loss-rebate deal at the Riviera. Now two more casinos have joined the rebate rush: Hooters is offering one for $100 and the Hard Rock’s is $500. There are now nine casinos offering a total of $2,650 in free money via these offers—Riviera, Palms, Hard Rock, Tropicana, Cannery, Eastside Cannery, Cosmopolitan, Hooters and Westin. Read more »

Going Underground

There are a LOT of entertainers in this town. Some are working. Some are looking. Some just used to. Get a bunch of them together and you usually wind up with something strong. That’s the case every Monday night when the Tap House (5589 W. Charleston Ave.) hosts “The Vegas Underground.” Read more »

The Big Play

Loss-rebate deals are among the juiciest of casino promotions, almost always coming with $100 maximum rebates. The Tropicana runs an offer for $200, and the Palms does it for $500 (Clark County residents aren’t eligible for that one). But no one’s ever seen the likes of what they’re doing at the Riviera right now—a $1,000 rebate. Read more »

Alternative Action

The 43rd World Series of Poker kicks off at the Rio in a week. This one’s gonna be interesting, as participation will provide an important gauge as to what’s going on in the poker world one year after Black Friday (and probably less than a year before the online game is legalized, in one form or another). It’s a long tournament—it runs until mid-July—and I’ll get into what’s really good about this greatest of all gambling events in an upcoming column. Here I want to discuss how you can get the big-tournament experience for less. Read more »
