Superstar Chef Nobu Matsuhisa Puts Teppan on the Table
The venerable chef opens his second Las Vegas restaurant
March 5th, 2013
Nobu Matsuhisa is a superstar. The 63-year-old globalized the cuisine of his native Japan, and he has restaurants in Budapest, Hungary; Capetown, South Africa; and Perth, Australia on a lone list of international locations. Actor Robert De Niro is his partner, and Nobu himself has a long list of credits as an actor. May you remember him as a villain in Austin Powers: Goldmember? Read more »
The New BurGR King
Gordon Ramsay’s most casual Strip concept might just be his most exciting
February 14th, 2013
With the opening of Gordon Ramsay BurGR at Planet Hollywood, the British chef completes his Las Vegas trilogy of restaurants. It’s ironic that he is now entitled to the mantle of Best Burger on the Strip. Bradley Ogden, the tenant that got 86’d at Caesars Palace to make room for his Gordon Ramsay Pub & Grill, was the former champion. Read more »
Tivoli's Second Wave
Poppy Den springs up from Petra's ashes and positively takes off
February 7th, 2013
Angelo Sosa, the young, movie-star-handsome chef at the new Poppy Den in Summerlin, is a protégé of Jean-Georges Vongerichten. Like his mentor, Sosa is a world traveler; as I write this, he is consulting on a project in Korea. The result of his wanderings is a menu filled with whimsy, imagination and bold flavors. SHe by Morton’s—a steakhouse for young, single women and the men who want to impress them
January 31st, 2013
We’ve just sunk down into our lavish, semicircular leather booth at SHe by Morton’s, a nightlife-inspired restaurant that is the second incarnation of the space originally home to Beso, when a basket of rolls brushed with cloyingly sweet honey-cinnamon butter arrives. Read more »
A Lucky Star
Woo’s Fú has the stuff to charm the Hard Rock Hotel’s gamers and partiers alike
January 24th, 2013
Fú—no puns, please—is the new Chinese restaurant in the HRH Tower at the Hard Rock Hotel, the name taken from a Chinese pictogram for “luck.” The chef is a local dynamo named Ming See Woo, a fixture on the local dining scene since the mid-’70s. Read more »

The Eyes Have It
Lured back to the Strip, chef Joe Elevado’s vibe-y new pre/post is both trendy and on-trend
January 17th, 2013
The sensuous, color-shifting eyes flashing over the bar at Andrea’s, the new Asian fusion restaurant at Encore, belong to Steve Wynn’s wife, Andrea, taken from a photograph by local shutterbug Denise Truscello. Indeed, everything about this build-out, from chic décor by Todd-Avery Lenahan to the Japanese-anchored menu by Nobu alum Joe Elevado, is an eye-opener. It’s hard to remember this room was once Switch. Read more »
Safe But Sound
Ramsay takes a walk on the mild side with his second Strip spot
January 10th, 2013
Everybody who’s anybody in Las Vegas, to paraphrase the writer John Gregory Dunne, goes by one name. Cher does Vegas. Celine does Vegas. So does Gordon. Read more »
A Fresca Outlook
Newly arrived Cantina Laredo boosts Tivoli Village with its moderately priced, neighborhood-friendly Mexican fare
January 3rd, 2013
Tivoli Village started slowly, but things have picked up of late, and the mall, which still feels like a poor relation of Boca Park, should gather steam in 2013. I like their chances. Part of my optimism is based on a number of new restaurants slated to open. Angelo Sosa is about to launch an Asian fusion restaurant, Poppy Den; and creative L.A. chef Sam Marvin will reveal a steakhouse called Echo & Rig sometime in spring. Read more »
