A secret Showcase, Monster Ham and Super Sours

I finally made it to Wonderground, the magicians’ showcase held every third Thursday of the month in the Olive restaurant at 3850 E. Sunset Road. This is another of those “secret” entertainment plays, a la the Vegas Underground on Mondays at the Tap House or the Lon Bronson gigs on Friday nights at Green Valley Ranch. Read more »

El Cortez supports DJs and downtown culture with Vegas StrEATs

Jackie Gaughan Plaza, outside the 71-year-old El Cortez, probably isn’t the first place you’d go to discover fresh musical talent. But El Cortez, Insert Coin(s), Slidin’ Thru and others have helped the monthly Vegas StrEATs become a hotbed for emerging talent. Read more »

Mobsters, Russian Food and a Decent Rib Eye

Things haven’t gone particularly well for Las Vegas’ other mob attraction, the Tropicana’s Mob Experience, where there’s been some legal and financial turmoil. But the biggest problem there was a $40 ticket price. No such problem exists downtown, where a much more friendly $18 price tag has been installed, and it’s discounted to just $10 for locals. Glamour, El Cortez Style

Before it turns 70 this November, El Cortez is getting all gussied up. On Sept. 1 the new Parlour Bar & Lounge debuts at the heart of the casino floor. The redundantly named Lounge Bar has undergone a tasteful overhaul, leaving intact classic touches including the brass ceiling panels and the vintage rope lights. Otherwise, it’s a whole new bar.
