Kyara, a Japanese tapas house, is attracting a loyal following with unique and affordable offerings of appetizers and skewers. True, there are other Japanese-style tapas in town, with Ichiza and Raku coming to mind, but Kyara manages to find the balance between the former’s low-key affability and the latter’s sense of adventure without siphoning too much out of the ATM. Kyara Japanese Tapas isn’t the first such restaurant in Vegas. We’ve already got sakaba, sake pubs serving food, such as the down-market Ichiza and the more formal and widely celebrated Raku. But Kyara is the first one here, I think, that totally nails the concept. It’s elegant, inexpensive and creative. Neither of the ones mentioned can claim that. Read more »

While spending a few days in one of America’s great food cities, Charleston, S.C., I thought of a restaurant we had a few years ago at Town Square called Louis’. Chef Louis Osteen, aided by Carlos Guia turned out the best shrimp and grits I’ve ever tasted, as well as many other terrific Low Country favorites. Read more »
