Dwight Yoakam

Las Vegas Hilton, Dec. 6

Playing the first of two nights for a post-National Finals Rodeo audience, Yoakam and his four-man band ripped through nearly 30 originals and covers steeped heavily in the honky-tonk, guitar-driven “Bakersfield sound” first popularized by Buck Owens and Merle Haggard in the ’60s. Read more »

Seven Questions

Rick Faugno

The former Jersey Boy on leaving the hit show, launching his own one-man production and why he was born 50 years too late

Not long after he slipped on his first pair of tap shoes at the age of 4, Rick Faugno knew he was destined to be a performer. The New York native just never envisioned the performing would take place in Las Vegas. “I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would ever live in Las Vegas—and I don’t think many people do.” Read more »

It’s No Joke

The other day I heard another comedian make a reference to Las Vegas and its “$1.99 all-you-can-eat buffets.” Everyone loves saying that, even though there hasn’t been a $1.99 buffet in Las Vegas for many years. Hilton displays wistful thinking by posting Week 1 NFL point spreads

Well, if the Hilton's Jay Kornegay is going to have the cojones to put up the numbers, I guess I better man up, break open the bankroll (which sits at $7,286) and make some picks. So here are three Week 1 “best bets,” plus a future game where I see some value. Read more »

Local Movie Mecca

In its fourth year, the Las Vegas Film Fest is picking up steam

The festival received 1,100 submissions for 2011, about 200 more than last year. In order to give each submission the attention it deserves, director of operations Milo Kostelecky enlists the help of film buffs and experts from College of Southern Nevada and UNLV. Each screener takes home a packet of 14 films, which they rate on a 50-point scoring system. After the results are tallied, 200 films fall into a category of recognition and the top 50 are shown at the festival. Read more »
