A Very Long Walk to the Altar
May 5th, 2011
Tens of thousands of people get married in Clark County each year. Few, if any, will have gone to the lengths that Laura Brunett and Joseph Crist have when they tie the knot at Lake Mead this fall. The couple left their hometown of Canton, Mich., on April 15, beginning a 2,500-mile walk to Las Vegas that will culminate with their Sept. 24 wedding. Read more »

May 5th, 2011
After eight rounds of chemo and 33 rounds of radiation, Mary Hinson was cancer-free, and she has remained healthy for the past eight years. She continues her work at Lake Mead, raises her children—Jerra, 10, and Tyler, 13—and speaks out on breast cancer treatment and detection. “I’m convinced that I had the results that I have because I found it at an early stage,” she says. Linda Buckley guides breast-cancer patients across the rugged terrain of treatment and recovery
May 5th, 2011
A lumpectomy, chemotherapy, then a double-mastectomy and reconstructive surgery followed. Linda Buckley had an edge in coping with the medical procedures—she was a surgical intensive-care nurse—but she still found the system frustrating and was surprised at how little information was available. Once she regained her health, she knew it was time for a career shift. Buckley is now a breast health patient navigator, one of just three in the Valley certified by the National Consortium of Breast Centers. She heads Sunrise Hospital’s Breast Center, the only comprehensive breast center in Southern Nevada—which means it offers the full spectrum of services for breast-related diseases. Read more »

With all of the sound and fury stirred up by the recent “Black Friday” indictments of three online poker operators, some major news that’s bringing Nevada a bit further into the future and a bit closer to the mainstream of sports betting in the rest of the world has gone largely unheralded. Last month, William Hill, a London-based bookmaking giant that claims 25 percent of the competitive market in the British Isles announced plans to acquire both American Wagering—the owner of Leroy’s, a chain of 53 sports books, 19 betting kiosks, and a Lovelock casino—and Club Cal Neva, a betting chain with more than two dozen outlets, primarily in Northern Nevada. This week, William Hill also bought Brandywine Bookmaking, parent of Lucky’s race and sports books. Read more »

Moms eat free
May 5th, 2011
I’ve never liked eating holiday meals in a casino restaurant. The spreads they put together are good and usually represent a value, but something about spending Thanksgiving, Christmas or Easter in a casino just doesn’t seem quite right. Mother’s Day, on the other hand, is different. Eating out means that Mom doesn’t have to cook, and that’s the way it should be. It’s not a question of where special Mother’s Day meals will be available. They’ll be everywhere. But some are better than others. Read more »

Hot Damn!
Bin Laden’s death is viewed as an Obama victory, but it was a Rumsfeld aide who broke the news
May 5th, 2011
The reason for his newfound fame was a 140-character message that Keith Urbahn typed out on his BlackBerry, amid the mad speculation over what President Obama was going to say in a surprise news conference on Sunday evening. “So I’m told by a reputable person they have killed Osama Bin Laden,” he wrote. “Hot damn.” Read more »

From coast to coast, statehouses are talking the balanced-budget talk, and wondering how to walk the walk
May 5th, 2011
Should you decide to shell out a great deal of gas money this summer and travel the country, may we propose a theme trip: a tour of unhappy statehouses. You’re likely to find that each state is unhappy in its own way, but that ours is perhaps unhappiest of all. Read more »

Chris Giunchigliani isn’t sold on the Goodman regime. And she’s confident that she’s about to end it.
April 28th, 2011
Chris Giunchigliani is 10 minutes late for our interview, and she’s not about to waste time apologizing. “I took one more phone call,” she says, striding into the Clark County Government Center’s nearly empty cafeteria, and she leaves it at that. It’s early on a Monday morning; Giunchigliani’s hair is up high and perfect, her business suit sensible and crisp. She’s currently a Clark County commissioner, and she’s hoping to be elected the next mayor of Las Vegas on June 7, so her plate’s a little full—and if that means running late to an interview, so be it. Randy Couture lifted MMA into the mainstream, and helped keep Las Vegas the fight capital when boxing hit the canvas
April 28th, 2011
Every fight fan has a favorite Randy Couture story. It’s hard not to, considering the 14-year veteran and five-time UFC champion has seemingly been chiseled in as one of the faces on mixed martial arts’ Mount Rushmore since his first win, at UFC 13, in May 1997. Read more »

Advantage Heller? Not So Fast
April 28th, 2011
Since John Ensign’s recent announcement that he will leave the U.S. Senate on May 3, analysts have made two assumptions. First, that Gov. Brian Sandoval will appoint Republican Rep. Dean Heller to replace Ensign. Second, that the appointment would give Heller an edge in his expected 2012 Senate race against Democratic Rep. Shelley Berkley. Read more »
