Viva Las Vegas is an exercise in endurance. Endurance of your ear plugs, your liver, your ability to fit into vintage shoe sizes. The 16th annual rockabilly extravaganza taxes even the most ardent fan. By the Sunday jiving contest, the host praised contestants for being able to dance, much less stand. Seeing either one of these musical geniuses in such an intimate setting would have been mind-blowing enough, but this was like watching two wizards casting their most powerful spells for public consumption. Sitting facing off, Corea behind his grand piano, Fleck with his banjo propped on one knee, the duo revisited most of their 2007 Grammy-winning collaboration The Enchantment. Read more »

Guitarist Jesse Cook Finds Balance Between Discovery and Familiarity

Every artist navigates a tense question: Is it more important to please or challenge an audience? New-flamenco shredder Jesse Cook confronted this issue when creating his latest album, The Blue Guitar Sessions. Expectations from his record label were clear: produce another instrumental album in his signature rumba style. But Cook hoped to achieve something different. Instead of the fiery performances for which he’s known, he sought to assemble a mostly original collection of soft ballads and lush pop. Read more »
