Goo Goo Dolls

On June 3, a flood of locals flowed into Red Rock Resort for its summer concert series, where the Goo Goo Dolls crooned their hearts out. And hundreds of 30-somethings stood poolside—intoxicated by the ballads. Read more »

Concert Review

Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt

It was like the two legendary troubadours were just passing through little ol’ Henderson, Nevada, and decided to put on a show for the neighborhood, if anybody’d be interested in coming. They’d brought a couple of amps and acoustic guitars. Green Valley Ranch had a ballroom and a bunch of chairs. What else was necessary? Read more »

Louis XIV

“The aughts” were a great time for indie music. After all the bullshit overproduced pop and whiney downtrodden rock of the late ’90s, the Strokes, the White Stripes and the movement led by the radio show Little Steven’s Underground Garage catapulted gritty, dirty, straight-forward rock ’n’ roll to the forefront again. Number 3 Pencils

Good news for Vegas musicians: Rock & Rita’s, the bar-restaurant inside of Circus Circus, will be opening its stage to local bands every Saturday night. The venue’s open design allows curious tourists to stop and watch whoever is onstage. On June 4, the two local bands were Number 3 Pencils (pictured) and Three Chord Radio. Read more »

On the Road Again … and Again

Tim McGraw reflects on his musical workload as he heads to Vegas

He’s won every major award in country music, but Tim McGraw wants more. “I’m only about 30 percent as good as I want to get in music,” the 44-year-old says. In an effort to expand his artistic boundaries, McGraw has released a crossover hit with Nelly (“Over and Over”), co-wrote a single for Def Leppard (“Nine Lives”) and hopes to work with Bruce Springsteen one day. The self-described “Blue Dog Democrat” has also hinted at running for governor of Tennessee one day, but he’s not sure why. Read more »

Soundscraper

Zombies, doom metal and Deadheads

The headline for this week’s Soundscraper only seems downbeat and mortality-fraught on the surface. It’s actually a very lively, buoyant week in live music, with everything you can possibly ask for—a benefit concert for special-needs kids, heavy-as-sludge stoner metal and a Grateful Dead tribute band from Cali. I will be at two of the three shows, so look for me. I just bought a whole new wardrobe of loud polyester dress shirts from Savers, so I should be pretty easy to spot. My editor laughed when I suggested this event last year, but I’m telling you this is the coolest (and slowest) aggressive music event of the year—the second Doom in June at Cheyenne Saloon, June 4 from noon to dawn.
