Ke$ha

Ke$ha brought her Get Sleazy tour in all its glittered electro-pop glory to the Pearl on May 7, and I admit I wasn’t expecting much. Her rapping and high-pitched screeching turned me off, especially after hearing “TiK ToK” on the radio more times than I can count. Read more »

Voodoo Glow Skulls

The fountain of youth burst open May 6 at the Bunkhouse Saloon when the Voodoo Glow Skulls took the stage. After a very aggressive, pleasantly violent start full of moshing and all-in-good-fun heavy pushing, the rowdy crowd was given a break to skank (ska dance style) with “Left for Dead.” Read more »

Elvis Is King

The original Napoleon Dynamite describes his most majestic album to date

Sometimes you think you’ve completely figured out an artist, especially when you possess all 32 of his studio albums, plus most, if not all, of his many live recordings, compilations, boxed sets, film scores and reissues. But the vast imagination of a musician such as Elvis Costello can never be exhausted—it threatens to exhaust you. Read more »

Imagine Dragons, imaginary band names and food-truck karaoke

It’s my birthday on May 13, and I honestly don’t know what to do with my aging rock-critic self. Lovers, imbeciles, anarcho-punks

As a music critic, I get a ton of review CDs in my mailbox. Ninety percent of it ranges from bad to pretty good, but every now and then a beautiful jewel of an album arrives, transfixing me so much that I want to learn more about and champion the band in question. My current dark-horse release is Lovers’ Dark Light. Read more »

Martin Sexton

Translating his music to the stage with the right amount of liberty from album versions, Martin Sexton’s April 28 solo show at the Hard Rock Café was a great night for those who appreciate a finely crafted tune. Read more »

Foreigner

Some bands are defined by their members—Ringo Starr and three other dudes are not The Beatles, for example. But Foreigner is a trademark sound: clichéd, superficial, but imminently singable lyrics driven by addictive, adolescent, crotch-rock power chords. Read more »

George Thorogood

George Thorogood is stuck in the past, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Thorogood and his Delaware Destroyers blazed through 35 years of hits in more than 90 minutes at Texas Station’s Dallas Events Center on April 30, with the singer/guitarist paying his three-chord respects to inspirations such as Chuck Berry, John Lee Hooker and Bo Diddley throughout.
