    The Best New Pool Parties

    By Laurel May Bond

Most have a preferred way to “do” a Las Vegas pool party. Some may choose to relax with close friends inside shady, misted VIP cabanas, keeping an eye on the DJ (and the writhing half-naked masses) from a safe distance. Others just aren’t happy unless they’re surrounded by fellow partygoers, splash-dab in the middle of the action.

Taste of the Nation blowout, four presidents for Ruvo, and Dirty Vegan Water

    By Max Jacobson

May has flown, but memories of several great meals and festivals linger. Taste of the Nation 2012 at the Palms Pool on May 17 could have been a bigger success had it not been for roaring winds that kept chef Barry Dakake from lighting his burners and presenting the crowd with Wagyu beef and pot stickers. As the host chef, he deserved a better fate.

Poolside brunch makes a splash, tony teppanyaki sizzles, and the art of breakfast

    By Max Jacobson

Now that the weather has turned warm and seductive, the poolside-dining season is coming into full swing. Two of our coolest pools, those at the Palms and the Cosmopolitan, have terrific new dining options, and I’m fresh off experiencing both of them.

    Midsummer a blowout blowout

    By Jason Scavone

A concept that shockingly hasn’t caught on elsewhere—putting girls in lingerie and letting them prance around the pool on a summer night—had its annual bow at the Palms Pool & Bungalows. The Playboy-affiliated Midsummer Night’s Dream party was Aug. 13, with a tricked-out DJ booth manned by Jersey Shore’s Paul “Pauly D” DelVecchio. DelVecchio, who just started touring with Britney Spears, talked about getting a little bump and grind from Spears.

    Gone Coco-Nuts

    By Xania V. Woodman

“We’re the Palms! When you think Palms, you just naturally think of a tropical oasis, and what’s a tropical oasis without exotic fruits such as coconuts?” asks N9NE Group mixologist Dave Herlong. His delicious Coconut Colada debuted this summer, a triple-coconut experience, which focuses on the pure, clean flavors of the coconut. “Using the fresh coconut water from the freshly cracked shell is an important ingredient of this cocktail. The fresh water imparts a natural sweetness that really stands out.

    We Want a Pitcher!

    By Xania V. Woodman

Why sip from the glass when you can just get the whole pitcher? Las Vegas pools are getting it right, stirring, shaking and blending up delicious cocktails by the pitcher-full. So pour it on!

  • The Deal

    Everyone in the (casino) pool!

    By Anthony Curtis

A decade ago, pool season didn’t mean much to locals. Casino pools were the sole province of hotel guests, so the only way to get into one was to book a room yourself or know someone who had. About that time, a couple of clever locals-casino operators realized that their pools were underused assets and invited the public in for once-a-week parties with hot dogs, beer, and maybe a live band. People liked it and a few others joined in. But it wasn’t until the Hard Rock went a light year farther and debuted “Rehab” that everything changed.

    Snoop to the Rescue

American Idol Season 3 winner Fantasia Barrino was back onstage just weeks after a suicide attempt. It seems that Snoop Dogg, like time, heals all wounds. Snoop was headlining the Fantasy Football Superdraft tailgate party at the Palms pool on Aug. 27 when Barrino joined him onstage. That night at Rain, Snoop returned the favor as she performed songs from her newly released third album, Back to Me—including a cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain.”

Before I dive into the abyss of superficiality that surrounds the 72 hours of madness known as Memorial Day weekend in Las Vegas, allow me to commemorate here the men and women who have given their lives for our country, and commend those who continue to keep our shores secure. It is important to remember why there’s no work on Monday. Or why the barons of this city’s nightlife import exciting talent. And why Southwest Airlines is booked solid. Though for The Captains of Industry, it simply means our crème loafers are acceptable again, at least until Labor Day.
