Connecting Two Worlds

As a former software programmer, I feel a bit disloyal praising the Digital World Expo. The three-day interactive conference, which begins Sept. 27 at the Palms, offers instruction for those working in new-media marketing. And since many programmers consider marketers a necessary evil, I was surprised how much I enjoyed last year’s inaugural event. Read more »

A Tree Grows in Vegas

Strip restaurants go hyper-local, sourcing healthful, nutritious produce from within arm’s reach

Las Vegas prides itself on indulging every whim and desire, but meeting the demands of an eco-conscious diner can sometimes be more challenging than catering to a high-roller. How does one reconcile a green lifestyle with a penchant for fine food? While the recent explosion of farmers markets suggests that we’re moving in the right direction, some restaurants are going a step further. Edible gardens—either on-site or within 60 miles of the city—reduce waste, minimize carbon footprints and keep the local farming community alive. Read more »

Diner's Notebook

Strip House stirrings, getting a fair deal, and Three Square Food Bank’s got the hot Dish!

I recently stopped by Fleming’s Steak House (8721 W. Charleston Blvd., 838-4774) to sample the new bar menu, and came away a happy camper. I started with a terrifically refreshing cocktail called a Blood Orange Fizz, and nibbled on crazy-good flatbreads, one with filet mignon and Danish blue cheese, another topped with roasted mushroom and artichoke. Yes

The Pearl, Aug. 19

When a veteran band starts replacing core members with younger personnel, there’s always a chance that the product is going to become watered down, or that fans will reject the lineup changes. And while the British progressive-rock pioneers have had 18 members throughout their 44-year history, the distinctive high-pitched voice of Jon Anderson is perhaps Yes’ most recognizable trait, gracing 18 of the band’s 20 studio albums. He’s ‘Good People’

Classic prog-rock bassist Chris Squire on keeping Yes fresh

Yes is alive. The groundbreaking English progressive rock band, scheduled to play at the Pearl on Aug. 19, first formed in 1968 and played its first Las Vegas show in 1971, according to Yes bassist Chris Squire. Yes has outlasted eight-track tapes, punk and disco—soldiering on, oblivious to trends, playing “Roundabout” and “Owner of a Lonely Heart” to multiple generations of fans. Read more »

Dirty Sexy

It’s a Midsummer night’s residency launch for Rusko at Rain

To the untrained American ear, 27-year-old Christopher Mercer’s quick and thick Yorkshire dialect might be a bit perplexing. Fortunately for the British DJ/producer better known as Rusko, his brand of bright dubstep speaks for him. Rusko launches a special monthlong residency at Rain on Aug. 4 during the Palms’ annual Midsummer Lingerie Masquerade. With two new albums in tow, Rusko is ready to drink, “skank” and find someone to teach him how to gamble. Read more »

The Magnificent

DJ Jazzy Jeff is back for Summertime

DJ Jazzy Jeff has come a long way and done a lot since getting thrown out of Uncle Phil’s mansion on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in the early 1990s. For those blinded by pop culture, Jeffrey Allen Townes might be from West Philadelphia, born and raised, but he was—and still is—one of the most respected turntablists in the business. A regular resident at the Palms with gigs at Ditch Fridays and Rain on July 20, he chats about DJ culture, mix tapes and, yes, Will Smith. Read more »

Chefs’ Night Out

What they eat during off-hours seems to be a hot topic. We sent our critic to get a sampling.

Chef’s Feed, a new app for the Android or iPhone, is on its way to Las Vegas. A cool concept already launched in American cities such as San Francisco, the app provides an interface that indicates where top chefs in a given city eat and their recommended dishes. Read more »
