Mobsters, Russian Food and a Decent Rib Eye

Things haven’t gone particularly well for Las Vegas’ other mob attraction, the Tropicana’s Mob Experience, where there’s been some legal and financial turmoil. But the biggest problem there was a $40 ticket price. No such problem exists downtown, where a much more friendly $18 price tag has been installed, and it’s discounted to just $10 for locals. Walking in to P.J. Clarke’s in the Forum Shops at Caesars, your eyes scan the black-and-white photos that plaster the walls and the crisp white linens draped perfectly over the dark mahogany wood. With the dirty martinis and Manhattans sitting in front of the patrons at the bar, you’d expect a thick cloud of smoke and the smell of fine cigars—and there probably would be if it were allowed. Behind the 125-year-old carved, hardwood bar stands Woody Linihan. Even without knowing him, he just seems to fit: His salt-and-pepper hair, soft weathered face and smart white-collared shirt invite patrons over for a drink. Read more »

I’ve never liked eating holiday meals in a casino restaurant. The spreads they put together are good and usually represent a value, but something about spending Thanksgiving, Christmas or Easter in a casino just doesn’t seem quite right. Mother’s Day, on the other hand, is different. Eating out means that Mom doesn’t have to cook, and that’s the way it should be. It’s not a question of where special Mother’s Day meals will be available. They’ll be everywhere. But some are better than others. Read more »

Do you love oysters? If so, you have to check out the happy hour at the recently opened P.J. Clarke’s in the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace. “Oyster Riot” runs from 3 to 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. till closing Sunday-Thursday. The menu is packed with different preparations of oysters (fried, in a pie, shooters) for $5-$7. But best is the price on raw oysters. You can get a dozen West coasters for $15 ($22 for East coasters). That’s an exceptional $1.25 per, making this the best deal in town for oysters on the half-shell. Read more »
