    Where the Spirits Are

    By Xania V. Woodman

It’s not hard to locate an adult beverage in Las Vegas. But for those who know their spirits, sorting the frozen daiquiri pushers from the real deal can work up quite a thirst. We’ve broken it down for you by spirit—the rest is up to you.

Dreams in the Key of Jazz

    By Sean DeFrank

Michael Frey, owner of Rhumbar at The Mirage, decided that he wanted to add a jazz night to his Strip bar’s weekly schedule, but the question of who would be the resident jazz master lingered. Then one night, Frey walked into the Seven Seas and chanced upon the musician he had been seeking. At the historic venue Frey heard a 78-year-old saxophonist play. Hearing his music, Frey knew that he’d found the man to helm Rhumbar’s jazz night. “They were such great musicians, it was like walking into a time warp into Vegas in 1958,” Frey says.

Ten finalists were chosen from 26 entrants to compete for a chance to represent Sin City in the finals to be held here later this month. “I think that we are doing a great job developing our underground mixology market,” says Vegas-based Team Enterprises special events manager Katie Dodd, on behalf of Bombay Sapphire. “We have some of the best in the nation in Vegas.”

    The Last Wine Taboo?

    By Xania V. Woodman

Somewhere, a butler is fainting. Mais no, I’d protest, it’s not a new idea, adding ice cubes to one’s bubbly! Well, not to the French, anyway. Une Piscine, it’s called on the chic French Riviera: “a pool.” I ponder the notion, sipping Ice Imperial, Moët & Chandon’s newest release, from a curvaceous, white plastic goblet at Palazzo’s Azure Pool. Launched in Vegas over Memorial Day weekend, the pale golden champagne displays fine, small bubbles and a strong, rich structure.

    A nice pair

    By Xania V. Woodman

“Rhumbar’s eclectic vibe and outdoor patio create the perfect ambience for cigar lovers,” says bar co-owner and cigar aficionado Michael Frey. The breezy and tropical-feeling venue at The Mirage offers monthly cigar and cocktail pairings, all perfect for the Strip-facing patio and all for $20. This month, the promotion pairs Cuervo Platino cocktails with a Montecristo cigar; come July, it includes a cool glass of 10 Cane rum hurricane punch and a Xicar HC Habano Colorado cigar.
