Simon Closings, Yardbird’s New Burger and Westgate Menu Previews

    By Al Mancini

It didn’t come as much of a surprise to most people in the industry when the news broke that Simon at Palms Place (702-944-3292) will close its doors when the restaurant’s lease expires in May. The fact that chef Kerry Simon’s hamburger restaurant KGB (in Harrah’s, 702-369-5000) will also be closing at the end of its lease was a bit more unexpected.

Best Meal You’ll Ever Eat in Your Boxers

Epitomizing the come-as-you-are party is the Sunday Pajama Brunch at Simon restaurant in Palms Place. For starters, just come in your pajamas; the staff’s in them as well (theirs, not yours, of course). Next, assuming last night was a typical Las Vegas Saturday night, make straight for the build-your-own Bloody Mary bar. If the world has stopped spinning, you can head to the cooking stations for freshly pressed paninis, sushi and a bucket of peel ’n’ eat shrimp.

    Meat Loaf at Simon

Chef Kerry Simon doesn’t look like he eats his famous meat loaf, which is a fine, fatty creation based on beef but bound with a touch of ground pork. It comes blackened from a charcoal grill, drizzled with a touch of marinara alongside great lumpy mash and veggies. $25, in Palms Place, 944-3292.

    Beware the Unicorns

Chef Kerry Simon took Vanessa Marcil—she of General Hospital and Las Vegas fame—to cotton candy school Dec. 18 at his Palms restaurant. She was with a group that included co-star Maurice Benard in the Herb Room at Simon’s Palms Place restaurant. For her efforts in the kitchen, she earned a cotton candy scarf. We’d never wear one, of course, because that’s how you get set upon by a herd of ravenous unicorns, but she looked swell in hers.

Celebrity chef Kerry Simon does a killer Sunday brunch in the Palms Place tower, a sixth-floor space with a pool view. Brunch centers on a lineup of live stations but also features hot à la carte items from the kitchen. The choices can be staggering: breakfast pizza slathered with country gravy, ham, bacon and a runny egg; pigs in a blanket; a sushi section where a bona fide Japanese sushi master makes food to order; hot panini; French toast; even the chef’s famous meat loaf. If you pay the extra $10 for the do-it-yourself Bloody Mary bar, you may never leave.

Lunch on the clock, a retro sugar fix and modern barbecue

    By Max Jacobson

When I heard that Simon Restaurant and Lounge at the Palms was offering a 30-minute power lunch, I had to try it. With a stopwatch, of course. What I discovered was that the staff members live up to their end of the bargain, but they give you so much food at once you might still go over the time limit.
