Lisa Hilton is at her best when she is guiding us down the back roads of our own emotional geography. Sure, she can riff heavy on traditional jazz, swinging with Gregg August on bass and Jaimeo Brown on drums on Nat King Cole-inspired “Jack & Jill,” but when the trio dove into “Emergency” and “Getaway,” from her most recent album, we caught a glimpse of our familiar selves in a different light.

West Side Story Misses Balance of Heart and Grit

Compromised by questionable casting and oddly inert, the tour of the 2009 Broadway revival of the 1957 classic ambled rather than rumbled through The Smith Center recently, its gritty essence gutted. Famously repositioning Romeo and Juliet in 1950s New York, West Side Story banks on menace and tension between warring gang kids, the American Jets and Puerto Rican Sharks, squaring off over the romance of ex-Jet Tony and his immigrant lover, Maria.

The Jets & the Sharks & Me

    By Steve Bornfeld

Immigrant goes to America/Many hellos in America/Nobody knows in America/Puerto Rico’s in America – “America,” from West Side Story Who's an outsider, who's an insider, do the distinctions matter, do they even make sense?

    Smith Center Gets Grand Bow

    By Jason Scavone

Wherever there is a prominent stage function, whether it’s hosting the Tony’s or opening Las Vegas’ newest culture-housing megalith, Neil Patrick Harris will be there. Harris was the master of ceremonies for The Smith Center’s grand opening March 10 that saw a flood of Broadway stars, dancers and musicians steeped in Americana. Basically, it was three free-verse poets, two abstract painters and a professor of Marxist literary criticism to really lock down the, “Wait, is this really happening in Vegas?” superfecta.
