Darkwavers, Guitar Gods, Melvins Lite

A curious week for live music in Las Vegas, and I’m curious to see a few intriguing bands. First, guitarist Les Dudek delivers dynamite blues-rock solos over pop-rock songs and instrumentals at 8 p.m. Oct. 18 at Boulder Station’s Railhead. Read more »

Indie-crossover pop, new wave-punk, demonic musical

So-called indie music continues to jump the proverbial shark. Consider the wild success of Vegas band Imagine Dragons. People label ’em as “indie” despite their first full-length, Night Visions, being honed by a commercial hip-hop producer. Read more »

Funky Mummies, Brooklyn synth-pop, Queer punks

I’m not sure how I’ll survive the weekend, since all the good bands are crammed into Saturday night. They’re staggered throughout the evening, and I hope to catch them all. Read more »

Zombie ballads, Virginia sludge, loud ladies

The best under-the-radar shows take place after the weekend, and the first is Troubled Coast, a rough-and-tumble melodic-punk group from Berkeley, Calif. At 6:30 p.m. Oct. 2, they play a free show at Zia Records (4503 W. Sahara Ave.). Read more »

Cigarettes, Swedes, Skulls

This week’s surreal underground rock show and art exhibit has everything I need for a good (and demented) time: a music video starring X-rated puppetry, original artworks by Jesus Lizard front man David Yow and the unveiling of an album by the best freak-punk/avant-metal band in town, the Fat Dukes of Fuck. Reverb-erations, inhalations, experimentations

Neon Reverb added a couple of last-minute shows you should know about. On Sept. 14 at Azul Tequila (115 N. Seventh St.), two local bands will add their rock ’n’ roll flame to the festival’s musical bonfire: indie outfit Earth Rising and The Burning Symphony, which is wunderkind Wyatt McKenzie’s new Pixies-style grunge project. Fabled storyteller, fictional beast, punk princess

Feeling bad that I neglected to mention that Ministry of Love released a video weeks ago for the title track of their recent EP, A Promise for Forever, out on Negative Progression. (My favorite moment is when bassist Patrick Trout, late for band rehearsal, misses the city bus and falls to his knees.) Read more »

Uncorking punk-rap band Champagne Champagne

Some of the most ferocious shows I’ve experienced in Las Vegas were put on by Seattle post-hardcore band the Blood Brothers. So when I heard the Blood’s founding member/drummer Mark Gajadhar was bringing his project Champagne Champagne to Beauty Bar at 9 p.m. Aug. 17, I had to contact him and learn more. Read more »

The Killer ballad of Michael Valentine

The saga of reformed poker player turned indie musician Rod Pardey continues. Demand for a reunion of Pardey’s Romance Fantasy (pictured below) has resulted in a performance at Royal House at 9 p.m. Aug. 16. The show will expand the band’s mythos in the chronicles of local music. Read more »
