Flying Into the Great Unknown
January 17th, 2013
Speaking of playoff surprises, how about that scoring binge last week? With combined point totals of 58, 69, 73 and 76 points, all four games easily soared “over” the total. This a week after the four wild-card games finished with 32, 33, 34 and 38 points. Here’s a stat for you: If you bet the first half, second half and game “under” the total in the wild-card round and all three categories “over” the total in the divisional round, you would’ve cashed 24 of 26 tickets! Rescaling the Fiscal Cliff
January 10th, 2013
Anybody catch the license-plate number of the semi-truck that ran me off the road and over the fiscal cliff during college football’s bowl season? Holy hell, you know it’s bad when both Bob Stoops and Notre Dame fans are sending emails mocking your pathetic bowl performance. Read more »

Our National Nightmare
The only thing worth rooting for in the BCS championship game is a lot of defense
January 3rd, 2013
The question has been posed several times in recent weeks: “So, who do you like in the Notre Dame-Alabama national championship game?” There’s no in-between: You either love Notre Dame or loathe Notre Dame. I loathe it (so much so that I’ve never even seen Rudy). As for Alabama, look, there are only two kinds of people who should pull for the Crimson Tide in the Nick Saban era: those with deep roots in Tuscaloosa and Saban’s blood relatives (and even then I’m sure there’s a cousin or two who think he’s a huge prick). LSU Heads List of Bowl-Season Moneymakers
Unlike Nevada, look for Tigers to finish the job against Clemson in Chick-fil-A Bowl
December 20th, 2012
Unfortunately for Clemson, motivation is the only edge it has against LSU in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Oh, sure, both teams are 10-2, but LSU played an SEC schedule, with its only losses being by a combined 12 points against Florida and Alabama (ranked second and third, respectively, in the BCS standings). Daily Bet: Bengals -4.5 at Eagles
December 13th, 2012
Heading to the NFL tonight and laying the chalk with the road team, for the simple fact that the Bengals are the superior team—in all phases. Sure, Cincinnati is coming off a heartbreaking, last-second 20-19 home loss to the Cowboys, a defeat that snapped a four-game straight-up and against-the-spread winning streak. Read more »

It’s lowly Lions’ turn to have their way with collapsing Cardinals
December 13th, 2012
Had any of a handful of close games gone my way, my five-week winning streak would still be alive. Then again, the streak also would be alive had I not backed two teams (Saints and Cardinals) that lost by the combined score of 110-27. Yep, to quote the guy who gets divorced and remarries the same woman, I’ve got nobody to blame but myself. Read more »
Daily Bet: Spurs-Jazz OVER 209
December 12th, 2012
Of the 13 games on tonight’s NBA card, none have a higher total than Spurs-Jazz. In other words, this is about as “square” a play as you can get—and we all know how those usually turn out. Read more »
Daily Bet: Pistons +5.5 vs. Nuggets
December 11th, 2012
Slim pickings on the betting board tonight, with only a handful of games on the college and pro hardwood. The best bet on that board? An NBA team that’s 7-16 overall, playing for the second straight night (and the third time in four nights), and has lost five straight times to tonight’s opponent. Read more »
Daily Bet: Texans +5 1/2 at Patriots
December 10th, 2012
The “F” word has been hurled in the direction of the Houston Texans at times this season—and by that I mean “fraud.” Read more »
Daily Bet: Warriors +6 at Nets
December 7th, 2012
Not that it matters, but here’s why I like the Warriors tonight: They’ve won and covered four of their last five games and six of their last eight. Read more »
