No Lonely Orphan

Super Summer Theatre’s Annie entertains with a classic show and child actors galore

A popular saying in show business is, “Never work with children or animals.” Thankfully Stage Door Entertainment and director Terrence R. Williams didn’t heed that warning when they decided to tackle a production of the classic musical Annie for Super Summer Theatre’s 2011 season opener at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. Read more »

The River That Never Runs Dry

A chat with the queen of comedy before her stand at the Venetian

Joan Rivers was fucking funny before women were fucking funny. Dressed prim and proper back in the ’60s, the blond New York fireball spouted jokes about abortion, and race, all packaged up nicely and sealed with an f-bomb. Now, Rivers is bringing Joan Rivers Live to the Venetian. Read more »

Show Review

BeatleShow!

BeatleShow! is pure Disneyland, for better and worse. As the lights went down on the Saxe Theater, we were invited to be 16 again. Monochrome TV “ON AIR” and “APPLAUSE” boxes lit up, and a single spot hit Ed Sullivan (a convincing Paul Terry), who announced a new act he was sure was going to make it big. And then, in black coats, white shirts and skinny ties, the lads we were waiting for jumped right into “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” just like they did on Feb. 9, 1964. Read more »

Dancers become choreographers in fourth annual Cirque and Nevada Ballet collaboration

Greg Sample is one of the 11 dancers (six from Cirque, five from NBT) who accepted the challenge of choreographing works for the purpose of “stimulating and encouraging artistic growth.” They are a part of a unique collaboration that began in 2006 as a way for Nevada Ballet Theatre and Cirque du Soleil to get involved in the local arts community by highlighting up-and-coming local choreographers and providing an arena for the exchange of ideas among local artists. The Yellow Bark Road

The Nevada SPCA donates a Toto to the Wizard of Oz, and a star is born

While watching the rehearsals of the Las Vegas Shakespeare Company’s production of The Wizard of Oz, I was not sure how Cheeto, a 1-year-old Chihuahua-terrier mix on a temporary work loan from the Nevada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), would perform as the iconic dog Toto. That was until Miss Almira Gulch (a.k.a. the Wicked Witch of the West) ordered Dorothy’s Uncle Henry to take Toto away. As Uncle Henry reached in Cheeto growled and barked at him with the timing of a seasoned vet. Later on in the scene as Toto escaped and leaped back into Dorothy’s arms, it was clear that this little rescue puppy might just steal the spotlight in the company’s performance at Henderson Pavilion. Hometown Headliner

Local Jo Koy has made it big, and now he’s coming back for a weekend of laughs

The 39-year-old comic Jo Koy strives to be relatable, which is why he gets the most satisfaction out of telling personal stories onstage. He tells stories about his mom because everyone has a mom, he says, whether she’s Asian and loves playing Wii, or not. He also considers himself a Las Vegas local. He spent 11 years after high school living here with his family and cutting his teeth doing stand-up. Koy, who recently shot a pilot to turn Handler’s book into a TV show and received one of the few standing ovations on Jay Leno’s The Tonight Show, will bring his comedy back home to Vegas on May 5-7. The multitalented Donald Glover brings his rhymes and jokes to Vegas

There’s a huge risk/reward swing for performers who step outside their designated profession. Chasing those EGOT (an acronym for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) dreams can pay off for Justin Timberlake, when all everyone talks about are scene-stealing turns in Oscar-nominated films. Read more »

X Marks the Spot

After four years of teasing viewers, this show comes back for another round

The word “burlesque” evokes visions of beautiful women, outlandish satire, an intimate showroom and the art of sensuality. The show X Burlesque takes these classic elements and incorporates them into a high-energy production with a fresh, modern appeal. For four years, this simple combination has held its own in the highly competitive field of titillating Strip revues. And on its fourth anniversary, X Burlesque is signing up for two more.
