The Story Behind Hakkasan’s Dance-Floor Magic

    By Jen Chase

Pulsing bass and building beats used to be all it took to satisfy clubbers to their dancing core. But with a growing need to see as much as we hear, the set of a headlining DJ has evolved into a chance to showcase their music against a backdrop of high-tech theatrics. At Hakkasan, hundreds of staff […]

Get Down with ‘Kanye’ at Hakkasan

    By Camille Cannon

You can’t get down to the live music of Kanye West until he’s here for Life Is Beautiful in October. But you can get down to “Kanye,” the new single from “#Selfie” hit-makers the Chainsmokers, which is inspired by Mr. West’s glowing confidence.

    Aoki New Year!

    By George Peele

Being Steve Aoki is a dangerous job. But paparazzi and stalkers are the least of the music celebrity’s worries. The Japanese-American DJ is the Evel Knievel of the EDM world, stage diving and crowd surfing on the regular. A trampoline leap gone wrong in Puerto Rico earned him a trip to the emergency room.

Wynn Shuffles DJ Lineup; Hakkasan Builds Its Stable

    By Jason Scavone

Just as fall gives way to winter and Christmas to New Year’s Eve, we find ourselves in a new season, with all its attendant glittering lights and mysterious traditions: residency season. With 2012 in the books, clubs are starting to come out with their 2013 DJ rosters, and no place dropped a turntable bomb quite like the Wynn/Encore clubs, which announced a staggering 42 residents for the year. Of course, if you’re not overwhelmed by sheer numbers, what jumps out just as much as who’s on the list as is who’s not.

EDC releases lineup for Vegas festival

    By Jason Scavone

Electric Daisy Carnival has released a lineup for the June 8-10 festival at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Plenty of familiar faces are on the bill, including Afrojack, Avicii, Tiësto, Calvin Harris, Kaskade and Steve Aoki. Several big-ticket names are still out in the ether, though. No word yet on Skrillex or the ubiquitous LMFAO—which isn’t a stretch, given Will.i.am’s spot on the bill.

  • All Aboard the SS Beats-tanic

From Jan. 6-9, the MSC Poesia experienced a group of cruisers they never had before: an ecstatic crowd of rave kids decked in tutus, furry boots, sailor hats and animal costumes who raged relentlessly 'til 9 a.m. It was the first time electro acts had set sail for a weekend long adventure. Around 2,500 rambunctious EDM die-hards loaded onto the 16-story boat as Holy Ship! made its maiden voyage out of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and set out toward the Bahamas.

    Kid With the Golden Arm

Steve Aoki has never fit into a mold. From his punk days in L.A. to the early moments of his thriving, 15-year-old record label Dim Mak (which translates to “a touch of death”), Aoki does things his way. The former hard-core straight-edger has incorporated punk-like antics into his sets, making him the most entertaining and interactive DJ to watch live. As music director of Surrender, he brought the trend of booking electronic acts on a weekly basis to the property. His biggest project and first studio album, Wonderland, was released Jan.

    A Year on the Edge

He flies through the air with the greatest of ease, the daring young DJ aims only to please. Maybe it’s a metaphor for a year like no other: Nevada earned the dubious distinction of having the highest unemployment rate, highest foreclosure rate and lowest high school graduation rate in the nation.

    Identity Found

    By Deanna Rilling

If Lollapalooza and the Warped Tour were formed in 2011, neither would probably be as successful, thanks to electronic music’s rise in popularity. First conquering underground clubs and raves, electronic dance music has finally been embraced by mainstream culture (well, at least the commercial side of it anyway). And now, North America’s first-ever touring electronic dance-music (EDM) festival embarks in August, taking over 20 cities this summer.
