Two years of designing, planning, fundraising and materials-sourcing—not to mention hammer-swinging—has come to this: DesertSol, UNLV’s entry in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon, has placed second overall. Sometimes a mist from the sea of scholarly labor sprays the masses on the shore. Such refreshingly accessible work is DesertSol, the name the UNLV Solar Decathlon team gave its house, which in October will be pitted against 19 other projects from around the world in a U.S. Department of Energy competition for best solar-powered, sustainable design.
