This is my 31st UNLVino (UNLVino.com), but I still peruse the event program in advance to see what wines I haven’t tasted in a while (or have never tasted). Here’s my must-sip list for the Grand Tasting, April 18 at Paris Las Vegas.

    40 Years of Cheers

You don’t become one of the nation’s largest wine events overnight. What began 40 years ago as a humble fundraiser in a liquor warehouse for Las Vegas’ hometown university has gone on to have a significant impact on the lives and careers of numerous hospitality students.

UNLVino Shines, The Springs Café Cooks and Sambalatte Grows

    By Max Jacobson

UNLVino celebrated its 39th year April 18-21, and I attended the Grand Tasting and the new Sunday Bar-B-Q. As always, organizers Southern Wine & Spirits put on a great show for a huge turnout. The Saturday-evening Grand Tasting at Paris Las Vegas featured a diverse lineup of wines, spirits and food. The more than 70 brands included Grgich Hills Estates, Pernod Ricard USA and Newcastle Breweries.

    Pouring Puck

Wine has long been associated with miracles. Still, it’s hard to imagine a wine that actually preserves memory, but in a way, that’s what Wolfgang Puck’s wines do. It’s no wonder that his 2011 Master Lot Reserve, a California sauvignon blanc won big at the recent World Wine Championships: The Beverage Tasting Institute honored Puck’s medium-bodied table wine—of grapefruit, passion fruit and apple aromas, and citrus and melon flavor—with a gold medal, as well as a 90-point rating and a Best Buy award.

    Seven Wine Trends

    By Xania V. Woodman

Southern Wine & Spirits territory manager Tony Goitia has seen 27 UNLVinos in his time with the company, so he has a pretty good vantage point from which to identify trends in wine, wine culture and winemaking. Goitia also taught International Wines at the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration at UNLV for six years, so he knows firsthand just how important the scholarship money raised by UNLVino is to the school. Over the years, Goitia’s seen some fads (Champagne splits with a straw, wine in a can) and some strokes of genius (screw caps).

UNLVino’s three days of wine-filled fundraising was an invitation to the community to “Take a Sip for Scholarship.” The “Bubble-Licious” kickoff event April 8 at Caesars Palace attracted a range of personalities, including Mayor Oscar Goodman, actor Danny DeVito and bubble-loving Robin Leach (bubbly in hand, blonde on arm).

Nevada’s oldest wine-tasting event, UNLVino, is back and is bringing with it a case of Sake Fever. More than 250 sakes will be on hand at the Palms Pool April 9 for night No. 2 of the three-day festival. The rice wine-themed party is a fresh addition to the annual fundraising event, which was founded in 1974.
