    By Heidi Kyser

Two nearly identical federal bills to establish a Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument have passed out of committee and are working their way through Congress.

Diminishing Lake Mead Requires New Solutions

    By Heidi Kyser

On April 16, the conservation group American Rivers named the Colorado River the most endangered waterway in the U.S. That came within days of the Colorado Basin River Forecast Center’s water supply forecast, which offered up the bad news that Lake Mead is at just 71 percent of average capacity. Then came news reports that the Southern Nevada Water Authority is planning a delivery-charge increase that may or may not (depending on whom you ask) affect customers.

Rarely do we find Democratic Sen. Harry Reid and Republican Sen. Dean Heller on the same side of an issue these days. Add to their team the entire Clark County Commission and thousands of residents of Henderson, plus a contingent of environmentalists, and you’ve got the diverse coalition that opposes two proposed gravel mines at Sloan Hills, three miles southwest of the Anthem, Seven Hills and Inspirada subdivisions.

    A Greener Farewell

    By Sean DeFrank

One of the most natural stages of life is death. But the process of burying our deceased in the United States has increasingly become more artificial, more harmful to the environment and more costly, thanks in part to the embalming process. One local funeral home is getting back to basics, though, offering “green” burials that are friendlier to the environment and more in the spirit of “ashes to ashes, dust to dust.”

    The Gas Man Cometh

    By Greg Blake Miller

Hey there, environmental do-gooders, do you remember the sweet soulful days of $4-a-gallon gas and happy-hippie talk of grass ethanol, electric engines and light rail? Seems a long time ago, doesn’t it? Go ahead and sing along, you nostalgic leaf-eating, Canada-loving, Bryan Adams fans. I got my first real hybrid Bought it in the Silver State Drove it all across the desert It was the summer of 2008. Then OPEC took pity on us all, crude oil prices went down and we got back to mocking global warming for the hoax it was.
