Who says Las Vegas doesn’t take care of its own? Jazmyn Franklin was raised by hospitality workers on the Strip, graduated from Valley High’s magnet program in hospitality and now attends Penn State with a scholarship from Las Vegas’ Epicurean Charitable Foundation. Franklin, who hopes to work in casino or hotel management, will enter her junior year this fall after a summer internship in MGM’s human resources department. After college, she’ll probably return to the Las Vegas Strip. “I love it.”

    Returning for the Right Reasons

Lon Kruger might not coach basketball in Las Vegas anymore, but his charitable involvement in the Valley has not subsided. A hefty contract lured Kruger away from UNLV to Oklahoma in April 2011, but his heart doesn’t appear to have ever left. Kruger, who led UNLV to four NCAA tournament appearances in his seven seasons at the helm, still has the house he recently built in Southern Highlands, and in a few years, he’ll likely retire in Vegas to a life of golf and leisure.

Last week, Clean the World opened a new recycling operations center in Las Vegas, courtesy of a grant from the Caesars Foundation. The Orlando-based nonprofit’s mission is to recycle unused hotel soap and shampoo, sanitizing and redistributing it to children in developing countries, for whom improved hygiene is a matter of life and death.
