For Las Vegas, a Win-Winco Situation?

    By Bob Whitby

I went to WinCo looking for Swiss cheese and cereal. I left with a new appreciation of the grocery store wars in Southern Nevada. March 4 was the grand opening of the newest player in the food market here, and the Henderson store at Stephanie Street and Wigwam Parkway was mobbed. (There’s also a new WinCo on Decatur Boulevard in Las Vegas.) The lot was so full that people were parking in a dirt field across the street. There was a 20-minute line just to get a shopping cart. After navigating near-gridlock inside, shoppers were facing another 20-30 minute wait to check out.

    Crazy for Missoni

    By Benedetta Pignatelli

After two highly successful liquid ventures (packaging for a limited-edition Coca-Cola Light and a San Pellegrino water), Missoni has produced 435 pieces for Target, generating a shopping epidemic among fashion fiends and eBayers alike. Angela Missoni, the Italian powerhouse’s chief designer, is taking it all in stride from the company’s headquarters in Sumirago, near Milan, where she took a few minutes to relish the successful launch in an exclusive interview with Vegas Seven.

    Kids’ Stuff

In 2008, Leslie Stewart, 35, started looking online for kids’ consignment sales in Las Vegas. She was hoping to buy and sell used items for her 2-year-old daughter, but she didn’t see many options. Stewart brought the topic up to two of her friends, stay-at-home moms Lisa DeLuca, then 35, and Lisa Renteria, then 39. She suggested that they start a sales event themselves, opening it up to all of Las Vegas. Together, the trio created As They Grow Kids’ Consignment Sale, an event filled with kids clothes, toys, furniture and more. Their first sale took place in March 2009.

    Monday, Monday

Most thrifty shoppers have heard of Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving when retailers offer ridiculous deals. Of course, to get those deals, you have to brave large crowds and find a place to park. If you’re someone who prefers to shop at home in your pajamas, then you may be more interested in Cyber Monday. Since 2005, the Monday following Thanksgiving has become a great day to find deals online, with many retailers offering such incentives as free shipping and wrapping.

    Think Pink

This is philanthropic shopping at its best. In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and throughout October, many Las Vegas retailers are offering a bevy of pink products designed to benefit various breast-cancer-related organizations.
