For me, the thought of using the sun’s asphalt-melting energy to power my air-conditioned cocoon, light up my big screen and chill my beer is a dream right up there with putting a human colony on Mars.

Is This the Home of Tomorrow?

    By Camille Cannon

There’s an unusual house being built at 328 N. Lisbon Street in Henderson. Its silver exterior clashes with the earth tones around it. Its roof is curved. Its floor is concrete. Those who pass by could mistake it for a military bunker, or a hangar for miniature airplanes. Or a giant beer keg tipped on its side.

John Entsminger has been the close-cropped, crisp, shirt-and-tie guy behind former water czar Pat Mulroy at the Southern Nevada Water Authority since 1999. While Mulroy was sometimes characterized as forceful, Entsminger speaks with a tone of calm certainty, of stability. Of reassurance.

Get Out of the Damn Shower!

By Phil Hagen, Jessica Kantor and Greg Blake Miller

Are we ready to shift our community crisis mode from “underwater” to “out-of-water”? Doesn’t feel like it. That’s despite the fact that our main water source, Lake Mead, is heading for another record low by this time next year (1,075 feet), when regional rationing begins.

    Silver State, Green Energy

    By Nicole Ely

Governor Brian Sandoval and Senator Harry Reid stood in front of the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign and unveiled a report declaring Nevada a clean energy economic hub. The sun, bright enough for Reid to wear shades, was being soaked up by 18 photovoltaic panels along the highway median. That evening, the glow of the iconic sign was, for the first time, powered by solar energy.
