    Rebel Time, Canada Style

    By Sean DeFrank

Time is on Dave Rice’s side, and he’s determined to utilize every minute of it. While most of the nation’s college basketball teams must wait until next month to begin preparing for the upcoming season, the second-year UNLV coach has been getting an early assessment of his squad before leaving Aug. 16 for its four-game exhibition tour in Canada. The Rebels, who are scheduled to play games in Ottawa and Montreal this week before returning to Las Vegas on Aug. 22, would have had to wait until Sept. 15 to begin practicing without the trip.

Four members of UNLV's loaded freshman class began classes on campus on Monday, when the school's third and final session of summer courses began. Marshall sets competitive tone for Goodman, UNLV freshmen at Desert Reign finale

Inside the not-so-spacious Sawyer Middle School gymnasium on Tuesday night, more than 3,000 basketball fans — most of them clad in Rebel red— packed themselves in, creating a stifling-yet-buzzing environment. They came to see four of UNLV's five ballyhooed incoming freshmen play on the final night of the Desert Reign Pro-City Summer League. And as each of the seven Rebels who participated entered the gym, they were met with impromptu ovations.

Following LeBron camp, Moser more confident than ever he can thrive as a small forward

Mike Moser didn't need NBA personnel to tell him what his weaknesses were this spring as he flirted with entering June's draft. But they did anyway, reaffirming what he already knew needed the most work this summer. "Basically, some of my weaknesses were that they hadn't seen me play a lot on the perimeter, so they weren't sure if I could do it or not,"the UNLV junior forward recalled. "I'm just going to try to take this year and show I can make sure we get a lot of wins while I do it."

And while next season's newcomers are sure to provide plenty of excitement and likely help lead the program to bundles of wins, there's no time for Rebels coach Dave Rice and his staff to rest.

Justin Hawkins’ lofty goal of graduating from UNLV in three years will be met this weekend

"Jimmy Neutron" and "Boy Genius" aren't the typical nicknames you'd associate with a Division-I basketball team's top reserve and defensive stopper. UNLV senior-to-be Justin Hawkins has gotten pretty used to both. Since arriving on campus, there have been plenty of times in which the Los Angeles native has had to say no to his teammates. No to going out. No to hanging out with the group for an XBox or Playstation marathon. This weekend, it all pays off, as the Rebels invaluable glue guy will graduate from UNLV. In three years.

Khem Birch preparing for a potentially major impact in 2012-13

Last month, Dave Rice sat in the Superdome in New Orleans taking in the Final Four, marveling as he saw the driving force behind Kentucky's national title run in person. Sure, the Wildcats will likely see six members of that team — five of whom are underclassmen — selected in June's NBA draft. But without 6-foot-11 star anchor Anthony Davis, 37 wins and the program's eighth national crown wouldn't have been possible.
