On the day former coach Charlie Spoonhour died at 72, UNLV honored him with both a pre–game ceremony and an outstanding performance. The Rebels returned from a rough stretch on the road to finally win one the easy way behind 50 percent shooting from the floor. Seniors Oscar Bellfield and Chace Stanback got hot and scored 16 points apiece, giving a happier ending to what was a tough day for first-year coach Dave Rice—a former Spoonhour assistant at UNLV.
